Tips & Variations

Variations

  • Cheese blend: Mix cheddar, mozzarella, and gruyère for flavor plus stretch.
  • Add-ins: Ham, tomato, caramelized onion, or bacon make it a meal.
  • Mayo griddle: Spread mayo instead of butter for an even, crisp crust.
  • With tomato soup: The classic American pairing — made for dunking.

Tips

  • Low and slow so the cheese melts before the bread burns.
  • Cover the pan to trap heat and melt the cheese all the way through.
  • Grate or thin-slice the cheese so it melts evenly.
  • Soften the butter so it spreads without tearing the bread.
  • Use a good melting cheese (cheddar, American) for that gooey pull.
