Tips & Variations
Variations
- Cheese blend: Mix cheddar, mozzarella, and gruyère for flavor plus stretch.
- Add-ins: Ham, tomato, caramelized onion, or bacon make it a meal.
- Mayo griddle: Spread mayo instead of butter for an even, crisp crust.
- With tomato soup: The classic American pairing — made for dunking.
Tips
- Low and slow so the cheese melts before the bread burns.
- Cover the pan to trap heat and melt the cheese all the way through.
- Grate or thin-slice the cheese so it melts evenly.
- Soften the butter so it spreads without tearing the bread.
- Use a good melting cheese (cheddar, American) for that gooey pull.
